The young Saltspring Island Middle School Tsunami Circus program is growing by leaps and bounds. I was asked to come to take a few photos of the dress rehearsal (with a full audience) for the Gulf Islands School District home page.
There are lots of things to think about in photographing an event like this. First, it’s dark everywhere, dark enough to push modern high-end cameras to their limits. This is definitely not the light for cell phone photography. It’s tough for a photographer to move around in the dark for fear of stepping on the kids sitting on mats. It’s less dark when the spot lights are on a single performer. But the performers move suddenly and often very quickly. For example, they sometimes wrap up in material all the way to the gym ceiling and—in a blur—unravel all the way to the floor.
It’s actually a fun challenge to photograph. If you’re thinking about shooting a fast moving stage event like this I recommend attending a few practice sessions, then watching a rehearsal to see what the performers will be doing.
